Gran Turismo 5 - 3D (PS3)

Very realistic!
This sentence kept coming back to my mind while I watched it being playing.

The 3D works very well and the graphics are amazing.
The details on the replay are very impressive. It shows the blades wiping the front shield when it's raining/snowing, it shows each new damage to the car every time you hit a wall or another car, it shows the tires turning back and forth when you try to correct the sliding car (you know, right before you crash on a wall?... hehehe).

The sound track is somewhat interesting. During the race it's as expected: rock. During all other times it's a very calm "elevator" kind of music. Very weird, but not bad at all.

I don't know the other 4 GT games, but this has a ton of courses, trails, weather conditions, cars, cars' colors, and other options of pretty much everything.

It doesn't show in any video, of course, but you can race with a FIAT 500. They make a race of only 500s because they won't go faster than 60MPH.  It's hysterical!

I only raced once and with a way too fast car for my coordination, so the experience wasn't the best. Most of the time I was against a wall... But there ain't much to do: it's basically left/right and run/brake.  It's just that the controller is set in a too sensitive setting for Diego and I couldn't handle it well.  But it can be changed to an easier left/right control.

Pros: lots of options, very realistic
Cons: the 3D can get your eyes tired

Kinectmals (Kinect)

What a cute game!
Very nice game for small children.

The intro is very long but it makes sense that it spends so much time in explaining every detail of the game for the little ones.

I first thought that it was just a pet that would interact with me while I petted and bathed it (like the Eye Pet for PS3 Move) but turns out it is an actual game with achievements and missions.

The graphics are pretty good and the reactions of the animals are impressive. If you have or ever had a cat you'll understand what I mean. The sounds that they do when playing or being petted and where the sounds comes from in their body (yes, that good) made my cats pay attention to the TV for the 1st time EVER.

About the game itself, as you do what you're asked to do you get more toys to play with your pet and you can always stop whatever you're doing to pet or play with it. You just hold your right hand to the side and choose a toy from the 'toy box'.
You can throw balls, rubber bears, choose the brush to clean your animal, etc.  It's really cool.

Pros: very good for small children, impressive interaction
Cons: long intro

Partying with Kinect (Kinect - Xbox)

Recipe for a fun party: grab some friends, a few drinks and turn your Kinect on.  That's it!

I had a blast a couple of weeks ago in a "Kinect Party".
It was hysterical to see how the guys were all over the place trying to figure out the moves and make more points than everybody else (and not failing in being goofy and funny at all!). The ladies were doing a better job as far as dancing, but the guys were soooooo much fun to watch that the ladies just gave up the dance for the laugh.

It was kind of hard to get people to start, but once each one had danced at least one time it became a challenge to be the next.  If we were in just a few more people I bet we'd have to start a list (queue)!

I wish I had recorded a few minutes of the party I went to but here is a random video from youtube...

I was amazed by how many more videos of guys dancing than of women I found  when searching for a "party video" to add here!
Most men never liked to dance so much as now (or never had the courage to show it of!). hahaha

The Sports game wasn't so popular (each game takes a long time to end so people have to wait more to play again, lots of sports to choose from which takes time too, etc), but I think that if you set a "Sports Party" it would do it.  It's just that the dance game is unbeatable!

Pros: lots of fun and quite a workout between dancing and laughing.
Cons: if you have neighbors below you, you might want to hand some cupcakes the next morning (even more with Sports than with Dance Central)...

Dance Central (Kinect - Xbox)

What a fun game!  =D

The game is very well structured to please from the most basic dancer to those who have been dancing since forever. If you are really basic they even brake the choreography down for you and show the movement a few times, until you get it. Then they put a few moves together so you get the idea of the sequence and get you ready to the full song.

Another nice thing is that they made the list of songs sorted by difficulty, but in each song you can choose the level of difficulty for that song as well. So even if you choose an easy song (and turns out it's too easy for you), you can choose a harder mode for that specific song.
I don't think it means that if you choose a song that is rated "hard" and choose the easiest level for that song, it would be actually easy...

The songs selections is fair. I believe they will keep adding songs in their updates (or at least I hope so).

There are quite a few characters for you to chose from (the dancer) as well as venues. You can also select "random" for a party, so you don't have to change characters for each person or keep watching the same dancer (and lines...  they always say the same things at the end of the song).
That's one thing about games (all of them) that I don't get...  Why do they always have to keep repeating the same lines?!

Something interesting for those who like to add fun to workout: the game has a workout mode that counts the calories burned during each song danced. It counts calories per song, not per time. That's really cool!

Pros: lots of fun, good for all levels of dancers, workout mode.
Cons: nothing.

Call of Duty: Black OPS (Xbox)

I don't really know the story behind this series, but I have to say I already don't like it...
The graphics are bad (comparing to other games like this - i.e. Halo 3), after over an hour of watching I couldn't get the story, it looks like there isn't much strategy involved (they are always telling you what to do), the shooting is non-stop and I couldn't figure out who were enemies and who were allies (not only me. Diego also took some time to figure that out!)...

Watching the game was definitely a duty for me. I was not enjoying it at all. At other times I'd have left the room in just a (very) few minutes.
The story goes back and forth all the time... There is a bit of story in between almost every mission! And sometimes the screen turns completely white for a while and it is very uncomfortable when your are in a dark room paying attention to a dark screen and out of nowhere it turns all white. That's a lot of light! I bet it's bad for the eyes...

One interesting thing though is that you have full control over the sounds. It means that you can lower the soundtrack to hear more of the shooting/explosions, you can lower the explosions to hear more of the soundtrack, you can lower everything but the voices to hear what the are talking, and so on.  The game even has a feature that makes everything more even (no up and down in the volume).

Pros: full sound control.
Cons: really annoying to watch.

Pinball FX2 (XBLA)

This game is FREE to download.

You can try all the tables for a limited time, then you buy only the ones you like best.

As far as watching, there is not so much to get you entertained (after all, it's Pinball...), but playing is a lot of fun.

The controllers are extremely basic: both triggers (the things that you rest your index fingers on when holding the controller).

And when you finish the turn (your 3 balls) you only need to press "A" to star again or "B" to change the table.  Very easy to do everything by yourself if you're not familiar with the Xbox.

Another cool thing is that you can split the screen to play against someone else at the same time.
One down side of this function though is that you can play with people online but you can't 'couch play' (play against someone in the same room, using the same Xbox)...

Check out the launch trailer:

Pros: very easy controllers, multiplayer with split screen.
Cons: some table are too polluted...

Update: Kinect (Accessory for Xbox)

After using it a bit more I can give you all a better insight (less excitement, more information) on the new Kinect.

As for what you can do with it:
- Control the Xbox using voice or gesture. No need to use a controller from the beginning (I tried turning it on by myself for the 1st time today, and it worked!);
- Access your Zune Pass (listen to music, watch tv and movies, watch music videos, etc);
- Chat with friends all over the world. A nice thing to point out is that the camera follows you as you walk around the room and zooms in/out to keep a good view of you;
- You have access and control of ESPN channel on your Xbox.

Is it easy to use the voice-control and the gesture-control?
Yes. You have to speak loud and clear, but it worked every time I gave a command. As for the gestures, the simple process of calibration and sing-in are enough for you to get a hand of it.

Is it weird and fun to use them?
It's darn cool! I felt so in the future being at my desk working on my computer and telling (literally) the tv to go to the next song on my play-list.

At the end of the day, I can say I had a great time. Turning the Xbox on by myself is something I never thought I would do.  I have Kinetc to thank (or blame) for it.

Kinect Adventures! (Kinect)

This is the game that comes with the Kinect.     It's a collection of activities, like the sports-medley games from Wii or PS3 Move.
We played the 5 basic activities for now:

- Rally Ball: the goal is to hit the ball to break blocks at the end of a tunnel. Very funny to watch! It's also a good coordination exercise.
- River Rush: ride a raft and move it around to pack in points on your way to the finish line. Even more exercise than the first.
- Reflex Ridge: this is the one from the picture. The idea is to avoid the obstacles. Very funny to watch and play. Makes great pictures.
- Space Pop: the silliest of the 4 games... More counter-intuitive than challenging and not as much fun to watch.
- 20,000 Leaks: pretty slow too, but very funny to see what people would do to plug the leaks.

Playing alone is fun and easy. Playing in two is even more fun, but you might want to make sure you're tuned with your partner to avoid hitting heads...

This is the promotional trailer for both the game and the Kinect:

Pros: lots of calories burnt between playing and laughing; very intuitive, for the most part.
Cons: you might be sore the next day from the exercise... But that's a good thing, right?!

Kinect (Accessory for Xbox)

The Kinect is finally here!!!

The "from box to use" process was really quick and easy. One cable (for the new console - two for the old one) and less than 5 minutes.
The base of the Kinect was already pretty stable by itself on top of the tv, but we used double-sided tape, just to be safe.

Calibrating it was very easy as well as the "facial-recognition" sign in configuration for both users.

Changing between users is also very smooth and easy. When you leave the camera area and someone else enters, the Kinect automatically loads the other user.

One thing that was about to start bugging us when it finally stop were the updates (already, I know...). At least the were all quick.

Check out the promotional trailer:

The Kinect already comes with a game: "Kinect Adventures!".
The game will have its own post, to come later.

More Kinect features (voice command, video chat, Zune, ESPN, etc) to be added soon.

Pros: very easy to use from the start.
Cons: many updates already.

New Xbox Dashboard

So, what's new on the Xbox?

- Now you can access your Zune Pass (listen to all the music you want and get to keep 10 each month) from the Xbox;
- There is a better parental control (and it lets you set allowance to your kids);
- The avatar is more proportional;
- The looks are different (of course...);
- It's Kinect ready.

Anyways, nothing from the outer world, but some nice new features.

Check it out on this video from Inside Xbox:

Pros: Zune Pass access, Kinect ready.
Cons: nothing really.

Chime (XBLA)

This is a strategy game mixed with music. Really nice!

As you add blocks next to each other, you make bigger block that are exchanged for bonuses.

But that is not what this is all about... Yes, the idea is to cover the most you can of the given area, but for each time you cover a bit more of the area, it adds notes to the music playing.

Depending on where you add the blocks, you'll have different notes being added to the song playing!

Truth be told, I fell asleep while Diego played it, but only because I was really tired...  Now I wish I had seen him play more.
Who knows if he won't play again?!

Btw, a really cool thing is that part of the profits of this game goes to a charity.

Really interesting game.

Pros: very basic control needs to play; music, logic/strategy and charity related.
Cons: Not much, really.

Vanquish (Xbox)

What a polluted game!

This is the most polluted game I've ever seen Diego play. There are too many patterns everywhere (floor, wall, suits, shadows, etc) and then you add to it smoke, fire, explosions and the bullet's trail...
Way too much information to deal with!

The cut-scene in the beginning of the game isn't good either. It's too long, confusing and there are lots of blood and people exploding, rocks smashing bodies in front of little kids and they got San Francisco's topography all wrong. It looks like the Golden Gate Bridge was added to Seattle's skyline...
Come on! Anyone knows SF is hilly, not flat!!!

Another thing that bothered me about the cut-scenes is that they always start the close up to the girl from operation (the one that tell them they have to leave or go somewhere) from the bottom, so it looks like you can almost see her underwear.  So unnecessary!
Oh, and the guy smokes.  So old fashion...

The sound track on the other hand is not bad at all. Of course, the shooting and exploding sounds mess up with the experience, but the music is a techno kind of background. Very ease to go unnoticed when you are trying to pay attention to everything else that is going on in the game.
It reminds me of a car race game's sound track, like "Need for Speed".

Pros: sound track is not bad, but it's not really a "pro"...

Cons: they got SF all wrong, very tiring to watch, no chance I'd play.

Super Meat Boy (XBLA)

This was kind of a hard game to write about... Or to define a score for it at least.

It's kind of funny, but after a while the whole "squared and bloody" thing got to my nerves. Not to mention I get anxious over seeing him dieing so many times at the same level (it's not all the time, but it happens).

The sound track is also not super nice to have as a background noise around the house, but it gets better with time. The problem is that by then I disliked it already to start liking it or even just not to mind it.

A few things you might find interesting:
- it uses the sound track to make it harder on the gamer (i.e. a beeping sound has a different timing than and open-close space that he has to go through);
- when the character dies, it reloads very quickly (so no frustrating long loadings all the time);
- when you complete a level, it shows you all your process (all the times you died to complete this level) at the same time. This is actually fun to watch (and the more lives it took, the merrier!);
- it's a classic platformer game (very short levels and there are over 300 of them!);
- the cut-scenes are short but very cute to watch.

Pros: fun to watch the replay with all the deaths at the same time when the level is completed.
Cons: I got anxious in many levels (the harder ones) and the sound track is annoying.

Halo Reach (Xbox)

Ok, so what's with all these "Halo" games?...
You can find quite a few tittles with Halo in it and yes, they are all related to the same game/story.

But why so many and what is each one about?
They are all parts of the same story. Like chapters of a book.

Diego never played the first 2 parts of the saga, but I'll have posts for Halo 3 and Halo ODST soon.
For now let's just focus on what this one is about.

Halo Reach tells the story before the story (yes, the 5th game finally tells the story before the 1st... Who gets that?!).
It tells how it all started, when and in which world the it all happens.

Now, let's talk about what really matter to us here: should I let my partner buy this game?  :P

Well, if you ever watched another Halo game, you know the answer...  In my opinion, the are all the same.  Shooting, dying, re-spawning, shooting, dying...  You got the idea, right?

I like the internet mode, where he can play short rounds and talk to real people. The idea of watching him play the very same section 20 times until he kills that one monster is not exciting at all.
But that is just me...

The soundtrack is not bad, but it's intense. Diego has been playing for a while now and I didn't notice the soundtrack until he mentioned (which, in my opinion is why it's not bad. If it was, I would be really annoyed in the first minute).

The visuals are the same as the others. I think they did a good job and it's one of those games that even though they move a lot, I don't get dizzy (which is always something to consider when you'll be just watching. Some games do make me really dizzy).

Pros: if you've seen it before, you know what to expect.
Cons: it's more of the same.

Infamous (PSN Plus)

Diego played only the demo of this game and it was enough for both of us to see it is a very weak game...

The idea is that the city was attacked and the guy started electrifying things and people and jump very high.

The idea itself is already weak, the graphics are just fine but not really nice, soundtrack is almost non-existing (only sounds of destruction).

Watching is really boring and apparently, so is playing. After the 1h demo Diego moved on to other games without thinking twice.

Pros: it was only a 1h demo.
Cons: weak story, boring to watch and play.

Tumble 3D + Move (PSN)

WOW!  The 1st game for Move that is also 3D!  Now that's high-technology!!   :)

The game is very basic, but loads of fun to watch and play.

You'll need a steady hand and loads of patience.  This game is all about coordination and precision.

Your goal is different in each stage but basically you'll have to add blocks on to each other to reach the stage's goal.
It can be adding vertically to build a high tower, add them anyway you want as long as you reach the number of blocks needed on a small surface, etc. The only stage that is very different is the one where you have to explode the existing tower and you gain points for each block in each point-zone (like and inside-out target).

It's very challenging and there are enough modes to keep it interesting.

There is also a variate of shapes and materials for the blocks and the game indicates how heavy or light or slippery they are.

Pros: very non-gamer friendly (you really only use 1 button of the controller!) and fun to play and watch.
Cons: it might take some time to get used to the Move controller...

Sports Champions (PS3 Move)

Sony released the PS3 Move today!     :D
Finally something that non-hardcore players will enjoy playing!

The game that comes with the camera+control is a compilation of sports to be played in many ways (challenge, championship, free play, etc).

Watching is a lot of fun and playing is pretty exhaustive, to be very fair.

The difference between the Move and the Wii: the only thing that I see is the graphics...  The Wii is more to the cute side, this one to the realistic side (not that it gets close to being as realistic as Red Dead Redemption, but the bodies are proportional to human beings).

Diego played all the sports and they are very different from each other. All of them have a big range of movements, but you always play against the same 10 players.

Pros: get to "move" a lot while playing and fun to watch (it will be hard to just watch tough...  hehe)
Cons: same series of players every time (but it's not like it would make me stop playing).

Flower (PSN)

The most relaxing game I've ever seen/played!

I've played it a long time ago, but it made such a good impression on me that I believe I won't forget it for a long time.

One day I was feeling very down, a bit sick... You know when you just want to stay in bed so the flu won't catch you?!  Like that.
Diego was feeling very bad for me and was trying to get me distracted from that feeling. That's when he had the idea of showing this game to me.

Wow!  I spent 3 hours playing it and absolutely did not realize! By the end of the game (yes, that short!) I was feeling so much better I could not believe. It took my mind out of the physical feeling and allowed my mind to relax.

The point of the game is to collect petals from flowers that you, the wind, goes by. It's all very slow and the graphics are gorgeous.  You can control the speed of the wind, so it makes it very easy to control everything that is going on.

Pros: extremely relaxing, gorgeous graphics.
Cons: you might get addicted (not that it's always bad...).

Red Dead Redemption (Xbox)

The game to watch!

Watching this game is just like watching an old western movie, with lots of action and beautiful scenery. Whoever drew this was really inspired!

Another thing that I really really liked about this game is that Diego gets to be the good guy.
He gets "honor points" for catching bad guys!  :)

The soundtrack is also very relaxing, with sounds of wild animals in the back ground and all.
Another cool thing is that it changes day/night and the moon changes with time!

One down point for me is that he has to hunt... But it makes sense (the man has to eat and it's the far-west, right?!).

Pros: relaxing to watch, gorgeous scenery, relaxing soundtrack, honor points.
Cons: he hunts (I just can't help feeling bad for the animals...).

Bayonetta (PS3)

The picture should say it all:  made exclusively for men.

It is so annoying that I could hardly be in the same room as Diego.

The story is nonsense, the soundtrack is fairly annoying, the (female) characters were drawn by those kind of guys that don't really understand the basics of human anatomy...

She carries 4 weapons (both hands and both feet!) and her HAIR is another weapon!  Her hair?! Really?!  Oh, not to mention, it's also part of her clothes....  Needless to say more.

The visuals, as a whole,  are not that sexy either. It feels like it's a 3D game seen without glasses. It's all blurry and confusing.
For a couple of seconds Diego and I actually thought if it could be a 3D game, but it wouldn't make sense since the PS3 software will only be updated next month to support 3D games from discs (now only some online games work on 3D).

Pros: none.
Cons: nonsense story, annoying soundtrack, overall annoying and stupid.

MotorStorm 3D (PSN)

Really fun game to play with friends!

We had our first "3D game night with friends" last night and this was the winner game as far as fun to play in a group.
Each round is fairly quick so others don't get bored but enough for the player to feel the adrenaline.

The soundtrack is very compatible with the kind of game, the 3D is very realistic, the visuals are nice. But the most fun were the accidents and explosions!  hehehe

Pros: overall fun to play and watch
Cons: the 3D glasses made me tired after a few hours...

Super Stardust HD - 3D (PSN)

First off all: what is "PSN"? Play Station Network.
It's like XBLA (Xbox Live Arcade), but for the Play Station.  :)

This is the first game in 3D Diego and I ever played (at home, at least).

The main idea of the game is pretty simple: spaceship shoots rocks (and ETs as you go further along).
But the 3D makes it very interesting to play and the explosions are very much like the in movies!

It's fun to play but it's like the old games: when you die, you start over (from the very beginning!). It doesn't have an "auto-save" so you can start from where you died and this makes it really annoying when you are trying to go through the very same level for the 7th time.

Pros: fun to play and the 3D is very realistic.
Cons: no auto-save.

Shank (XBLA)

This is another "boys' game"...

Loads of blood, some language, barely dressed girls with a waist that is 1/3 of their own heads, the story is blurry and there is nothing honorable about it...

To make it even better, Diego has been playing against the same guy for the past one and a half hours!  How can he be able to get there if he won't be able to kill the guy?!?!

Anyways, besides all that, the looks are kind of funny (looked like I was watching a cartoon) and the soundtrack is not bad.

Bottom line is: if you don't mind the blood/language, it's kind of fun to watch. But I still had zero interest in playing it.

Diego told me there is a different story for the multi-player mode, but I decided it'll have to wait for another opportunity.

Pros: funny graphics (the looks) and not bad soundtrack.
Cons: too much blood, characters drawn for boys, silly story (revenge).

Scott Pilgrim vs. The World: The Movie

As you can guess by now, I couldn't find anyone to watch this with Diego... 'What don't we do for love?'

As any movie made from a written original, it's just not as good.
Or at least that's what Diego told me... He read the 6 comic books (I didn't).

The perspective from someone that read the whole thing: lots of changes in the story, but nice visual effects resembling both the comic book drawings and a video-game.
The perspective from someone that didn't read and was not really interested in the movie either: very silly, but I have to agree that the visuals are kind of funny and not too much so it would be annoying.

My overall opinion about the movie:
If you think you might be interested, don't read the comic books and go for the movie. Or vice-verse...  I just don't recommend doing both (from Diego's experience).
If you can go to the movies just to keep company to you loved one, go for it. Don't expect to have a blast, but count on getting some points with him (and you can always use them later!  hehe).
If you don't think you can tolerate such a boys' movie, find him a friend that does...  ;)

Pros: earn some points for being such a nice wife.
Cons: it is kind of a waste of time and money...

Scott Pilgrim vs. The World: The Game (XBLA)

For those that don't know (probably most of us, women...), it all started with a comic book...   Needless to say more, right?  Boys' things...

Ok, so the comic books had some success (well, maybe more than "some") and someone decided to make not only a movie, but a game about it.

Both game and movie were released at the same time, a couple of weeks ago.  We haven't been to the movies yet (I'm trying to arrange for him to go with a friend... hehe) but he's been playing the game for a few days now and I have to say: this is not fun to watch...

Why do I dislike this game? Even if it's just to watch?
Let's start by the looks: it's pixels!  Ok, it's meant to look old-fashion, but it's really irritating!
And the sounds....  Oh, the sounds....
The soundtrack must have no more than 10 seconds (now put it to an hour worth of listening on repeat!).  Not only that, the sound is very electronic. I don't know really how to explain it, but it drives me crazy!

Pros: nothing.
Cons: looks bad, sound awful, silly story.

Lara Croft and The Gardian of Light (XBLA)

First off all: what's 'XBLA'? Xbox Live Arcade. Aka: games online for the Xbox.

Now, lets talk about this game.
The cool thing about it is the way the characters interact with each other. They depend on each others ability to go on through the game.

She throws a rope at certain spots that he can walk on to cross over long gaps and he throws spears on the walls that she can climb on to reach things up high and also to cross some gaps or obstacles.

But what I liked the most about this game were 2 things: the controls are not super sensitive (and you only use a couple of buttons!) and the whole game is fairly short (about 8 hours).

Pros: fun, short and easy to play.
Cons: not the kind of game I'd like to just watch.

What's the point?

Hey there!
So what am I doing here? What is this blog all about?
Let's start by saying that I'm not a gamer; never was. But I married a game-lover that got a job with video-games...

Diego, my dear husband, works for Microsoft Game Studios (MGS), with the online games for Xbox. That said, he "has" to play as many games (both from the Xbox and from the PlayStation) as he can to know what it's going on in the industry and to be able to share his opinions about what he thinks would be nice to have in a new game and what he thinks is not a good idea...

And what do I have to do with all that?!
First of all: he plays at home, so I pretty much have to watch him playing since he plays almost every night after work.
Second: most of these games have a multi-player mode that he wants to try.
Third: MGS  is trying to broaden its costumer base. Lets face it, who plays games? Yong men for the most part.  Since the Wii they realized that there are more people in the world!  Wow!

Anyways, after 6 months of watching him playing a few hours a day I ended up getting used to the idea of it. Xbox games became my new "favorite" tv shows. We even canceled cable!
And why does he want me to at least watch? To give him the perspective of a person that definitely doesn't care (not to mention the fear of that gigantic control with a gazillion buttons) about games.  And I really fit in this category!  It took me 4 months to give up and let him teach me how to turn the "thing" on and off...
So now that I actually know how to use the control I started playing a few games with him (and for my surprise I found myself enjoying it the other day!).

My intention with this blog is to give a non-gamer point of view of some games.
I hope it gives some perspective to those like me, that had their loved ones "stolen" by the game industry, and maybe even helps you enjoy yourself more while they (or both of you!) play.

Thanks!
